THURSDAY, 12th DECEMBER 2024 - CAMBRIDGE

Image
A good friend and I decided to visit Cambridge.  It was a chilly, rather misty morning and we felt being in a city would be a bit more comfortable than out "in the wilds" somewhere. On the way to Cambridge, we passed the American Cemetery at Madingley.  Despite having been there before on more than one occasion, we decided to call in, thinking that the mist might give some atmospheric photos. Here are some of my shots. After a while the mist started to disperse so we headed into Cambridge. We had no firm plans but had an idea of visiting one of the colleges. King's wasn't open to visitors that day but St John's was and that's where we went.  The highlight of that visit was the chapel. There was a rehearsal scheduled and the interior was very nicely lit for that .... and for photography. One of the problems when shooting subjects like the chapel is that light coming through the windows is much brighter than the interior light and it's difficult for a camera...

FRIDAY, 6th DECEMBER 2024 - SHUTTLEWORTH IN LIGHTS

Image
Four of the Oid Geezers went to see "Shuttleworth in Lights" again this year after enjoying the spectacle last year. Unfortunately the weather forecast wasn't looking to good for us. Storm Darragh was expected this weekend and before the stronger winds arrived,  heavy rain was expected in the evening - not good for electrical systems or for cameras. But our determination to go regardless was rewarded and the rain didn't really materialise until we were leaving the garden. Apparently Shuttleworth had set up the lights themselves this year rather than going to the expense of paying a company to do it. And if I'm honest, I think it showed in the display. There were also much fewer visitors on the night we were there. But we did enjoy the evening and got home safely before Darragh arrived in earnest. As always, thanks for taking the time to read this  :) Den

MONDAY, 2nd DECEMBER 2024 - SEALS

Image
Three Old Geezers went to Horsey Gap to try and photograph some of the seals hopefully breeding there  We had planned on going to Donna Nook but rain was forecast to reach there earlier than Horsey so we changed our plans. I was picked up at about 7am and we headed east. Approximately 2 hours later, we stopped for a refreshment/toilet break before completing the journey to Horsey Gap. We were soon parked up and with cameras at the ready, we headed for the dunes. A very pleasant warden explained where we could view the seals from and said other wardens were roaming the dunes ready to answer any questions - something we later took advantage of. There were lots of seals on the beach. The photo above shows just one section so that gives an idea of how popular it is with the seals . From a photography point of view, I'd preferred to have been lower down but there were no such viewpoints. It's usual best to try to get on eye level with animals and people (especially children) when ta...
